What you wear on camera makes a real difference in how a video turns out. Certain patterns, colors, and fabrics can distract viewers or even cause technical issues on camera, while others help you look polished, comfortable, and camera-ready.

What to Avoid

  • Tight patterns (herringbone, houndstooth, tight plaids) — they can cause a flickering effect on camera
  • Pure white, pure black, light grey, and pale pastels — they can blow out, look flat, or wash you out on camera
  • Shiny, reflective fabrics like satin
  • Large logos or text
  • Loud clothing - we mean stiff fabrics, fabrics that rustle or crinkle, or jewelry that may scrape microphones

What We Recommend

  • Solid colors, especially darker tones and jewel tones - deep blues, greens, burgundy, rust orange, and similar shades
  • Well-fitted but not tight clothing - something you'll be comfortable in while sitting or standing on camera

General Appearance Tips

  • Simple, neat hairstyling - keep hair off your face, and bring a comb or brush along for touch-ups
  • Minimal jewelry - avoid earrings or bracelets that make noise or reflect light; studs are ideal for pierced ears, and a watch is not a problem
  • Makeup - for those who wear it, opt for a light base and matte, non-reflective products when possible; matte powder helps reduce shine and looks more flattering on camera

Advanced Considerations

  • If you know where you will be filming - be sure your clothing contrasts with the background enough to stand out
  • If you're going to be mic'd up - Button-down shirts, blazers, or tops with sturdy collars provide a better anchor for lavalier microphones. Flimsy crewneck t-shirts make routing wires and attaching battery packs difficult.
