Tomorrow morning, a freelance videographer you found on the internet is going to walk into your company’s Dallas office. They are going to mic up your Vice President of Sales. They are going to represent your department, your brand, and your creative vision.
And you have never met them.
If you are a Creative Director, Head of Marketing, or Head of Production you’ve likely experienced "The Night Before" anxiety.
Their website looked good. Their reel was good enough, but the doubts creep in:
Are they going to show up on time?
Are they going to make some horrible off-color comment?
What if their audio fails?
Vetting a remote video crew can feel like a gamble. A beautiful two-minute portfolio reel can easily hide a chaotic on-set presence, poor communication skills, and a lack of technical redundancy. When enterprise teams try to build their own local networks, they usually learn these lessons the hard way, but they don’t have to.
Lightswitch Video has spent the past 15 years curating a deeply vetted, world-class network of video professionals across all 50 states and around the globe. We guarantee the quality of our crews because in most cases, we’ve worked with them dozens of times.
On the rare occasion we have to find someone new - we don’t just look at their portfolios; we put them through a rigorous, proprietary vetting process that goes far beyond the lens.
We’re also always transparent - when all of our trusted crews are booked, we’ll let you know if you’re going to work with someone, new and give you the option to pursue another option.
1. Looking at similar work
Most people look at a videographer's sizzle reel, see some beautiful, slow-motion footage of a sports car or a music video, and check that box. But each project requires a different skillset - we strictly vet for similar work. We take a look at full, completed corporate projects that prove they can handle the exact type of content our enterprise clients need. We will often have different crewmembers for different types of projects with the same city - real estate, interview, narrative, product videos, etc all require different skillsets and equipment.
2. Communication Skills
How a freelancer handles pre-production is a direct indicator of how they will act on set. When we reach out to a potential crew member, we track their responsiveness. Do they reply to emails quickly? Do they answer their phone? Do they ask clarifying questions, or do they just say "Got it" to everything? If a videographer takes 48 hours to return a simple email during the quoting phase, they are disqualified. Fast, clear communication is non-negotiable for our dedicated producers.
3. Bedside Manner
Corporate video isn’t just about tech specs, soft skills are often what makes the difference between good work and great. When a crew is mic'ing up a nervous customer or a time-strapped CEO, they need exceptional "bedside manner." We vet our crews for professionalism, emotional intelligence, and on-set demeanor. We need to know they will show up in appropriate attire, speak respectfully, make the talent feel at ease, and represent your brand (and us!) as if they were a full-time employee of your company.
4. Asking the right questions
All video crews obsess over gear, but great crews understand it’s just a tool of the trade. When we vet a crew, we listen to the questions they ask us. If they only ask about resolution and frame rates, it’s a red flag. We look for videographers who ask about the purpose of the video. Who is the audience? Where is this going to be published? What is the core message? A crew that understands the actual needs of the project will naturally make better micro-decisions on set than a crew that is just following technical specs.
(We want them to ask a lot of the questions we ask in our pre-pro calls)
5. Gear
You can’t shoot a high-end enterprise interview with an iPhone and a cheap ring light, or at least you shouldn’t. So while we just diminished the importance of gear in the previous paragraph - we vet every crew to make sure they have the proper gear and know how to use it, and that it’s the right equipment for the specific shoot. If it’s a run-and-gun event recap, do they have the proper stabilization rigs? If it’s a multi-cam executive address, do they have perfectly matched lenses?
Everything went great - the crew on the ground was wonderful to work with and our producer has been amazing pulling everything together!
6. Shooting for the Edit
A great shooter makes the editor’s life easy. A bad shooter makes post-production a nightmare. We vet our crews on their understanding of the editing process. Do they capture 30 seconds of "room tone" audio before wrapping? Do they let the talent sit in silence for five seconds before and after a take to give the editor clean cut-points? Do they capture wide, medium, and tight b-roll shots so our post-production team can build seamless sequences?
7. Proven Reliability and The Track Record
Finally, there is no substitute for a proven track record. When you hire a freelancer off the internet, you are their beta tester. When you work with Lightswitch, you are utilizing crews that we have built deep, multi-year relationships with. We have an internal records system based on hundreds of past shoots. We know who excels at events, who is the master of the sit-down interview, and who we trust with our biggest enterprise clients. It is a closed ecosystem of guaranteed reliability.
